Segments
A segment is a saved group of contacts, defined by rules. Segments update themselves: a contact who starts matching the rules joins, and one who stops matching leaves.
Use segments to:
- choose who receives a broadcast, and
- limit an automation to some contacts.
Build a segment
Section titled “Build a segment”Go to Audience → Segments and choose New segment, or start from a ready-made one such as New this month, Never contacted, Inactive 30 days, High engagement or Has email.
Add rules, combined with all (and) or any (or). Group rules for combinations like “in London and (tagged VIP or spent over 500)”.
| Rule on | Ways to match |
|---|---|
| Contact fields and custom fields | is, contains, is empty, greater or less than (numbers), before, after or on (dates) |
| Tags | has any of, has none of, has any tag, has no tags |
| Last contacted | before, after, on |
| Message count | at least, at most, greater than, less than |
| Never contacted | yes |
The count updates as you edit, so you can see how many contacts match before saving.
Include or exclude specific people
Section titled “Include or exclude specific people”Add contacts by hand to always include them, or exclude them whatever the rules say. An imported list becomes a segment of exactly those people.
All opted-in contacts
Section titled “All opted-in contacts”Broadcasts can also go to All opted-in contacts: everyone with marketing consent on the channel. It’s built in and needs no setup.
Consent still applies
Section titled “Consent still applies”Being in a segment doesn’t override consent. A marketing broadcast to a segment only reaches the people in it who agreed to marketing on that channel, and nobody who opted out receives anything.
